Because flights to Cancun are only a few hours from Texas and Florida, many visitors from the US forget they are entering another country. A shocking number of Americans forget this fact and try to fly without documentation. US citizens will need a passport, or certified birth certificate and photo ID.
Visitors to Mexico from most countries, including the US, do not need a visa to enter the country. To pass through immigration, each visitor must fill out a tourist form. Carefully fill out each section of the tourist form, and check to see you signed on the back if necessary. Don't lose it during your vacation or you can be fined when you leave the country. If you do lose it, report it stolen to the police and the airport officials will accept the police report in lieu of the form.
After immigration you pick up your luggage and go through customs. Have your customs declaration form in hand. When you get to the customs agent, push the button on the stoplight type signal. If it is green, pass through. If it is ready, your luggage will be searched. Sometimes the agent will search your luggage anyway. This process usually doesn't take long and the agents are courteous, but most don't speak English, so be patient.
